Antismoking is a big global trend and Japan is no exception. Many municipals in Japan forbids smoking on the streets and you can no longer smoke outside of designated smoking areas. 【Tobacco vending machine】
To prevent smoking of the minors, all tobacco vending machines were changed to “IC-card required version” where you have to hold a registered e-card “taspo” which proves you are an adult. It used to be possible for anyone to purchase tobacco from a tobacco vending machine, but now, you need the “taspo” to do so. If you are non-Japanese national, you cannot purchase tobacco from vending machine.

【Tabaco selling at convenience store】
If you go to a convenience store, you will be able to purchase a wide variety of tobacco sold in Japan. Selling tobacco requires convenience store to have a license, so those who do not have it might not be selling.
■How to purchase tobacco at convenience store
You find a whole variety of tobacco numbered on their displays. Tell the staff which # you want to purchase of.
It’s wise avoid asking one with its name because there are many different types of tobacco under a same name, a same brand.
When the staff input your order into the cash machine, the machine will ask you to confirm you are over 20 years old. For that, tap “YES” on the cash machine screen. If you are obviously an adult, the staff might skip the process.
【Price of tobacco】
Most of tobacco in Japan are around 400-450 yen. 65% of the price is tax.
